WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

With the advent of Covid-19, India went into an instant lockdown which left migrant workers in abysmal conditions, workers were without food and did not have means to earn their livelihood. Consumers moved their purchasing behaviour to super markets or online shops, keeping social distancing in mind.
The speedy shift from offline to online led to a massive loss for street vendors. Given this context, the Government of India announced the ‘PM Street Vendor’s Atma Nirbhar Nidhi’ in order to facilitate the street vendors; with a working capital loan up to INR 10,000, at subsidized rate of interest.
While initiatives like these are helping street vendors slowly recover from this crisis, it is critical to take action to remove the barriers that are leading to their continued precarity and vulnerability, even as the sector is governed under progressive legislation. STR-EAT aims to do just that and more - with our unique curriculum and training modules, we hope to emancipate these vendors with information and knowledge, which will help them compete in the ‘new normal’ markets.
